Does smoking affect fracture healing?

Smoking usually affects fracture healing because it may lead to osteoporosis and a large loss of calcium in the bone, which may affect fracture healing and in severe cases may lead to delayed healing or even non-healing. Therefore, it is recommended to avoid smoking and alcohol after a fracture, and also to treat certain conditions and to promote fracture healing with appropriate activities as well as exercise and partial weight-bearing, but smoking is absolutely not allowed and can seriously affect fracture healing and even late osteoporosis. In addition, medication is recommended to promote fracture healing, and surgery is required for severe fractures to restore the stability and anatomical position of the fracture end, thus playing a role in later fracture healing and limb function recovery.
