An enema is a technique that uses a catheter to instill fluid into the colon to help the patient pass stools and cleanse the bowel.
The specific operation is as follows.
1. Prepare the appropriate amount of solution and paraffin oil according to medical advice.
2. Confirm the patient’s identity and the patient’s mental status, and inform the patient to start the enema.
3. Place the patient in the left lateral position, legs bent at the knees, pants off. The bed sheet should be padded with a waterproof nursing pad and gloves should be put on.
4. Place the curved disk on the hip side and open the disposable enema package. Connect the enema bag to the anal canal. The enema bag should be placed 40~60cm from the anus.
5. Fill the tube with solution to exhaust the gas in the anal canal, and then clip the tube.
6. Lubricate the anus 10cm in front of the tube, then spread the patient’s buttocks. With the other hand, place the anal tube at the anus and slowly insert the anal tube into the anus, usually 7~10cm for adults.
7. After the anal tube is inserted into the anus and fixed, open the tube clamp and let the solution enter slowly, until the solution is filled. During the period to pay careful attention to the patient’s state, if there is any abnormality should stop the enema.
8. After the end of the enema with a sterile square gauze in the perianal package anal tube gently pulled out, the items will be withdrawn.
9. Instruct the patient to try to retain the enema solution for 5~10 minutes before defecation.
