Complications of closed thoracic drainage

Complications of closed thoracic drainage include injury to the intercostal vessels, resulting in intrathoracic bleeding. Damage to the intercostal nerves, resulting in severe pain at the drainage port. Damage to the lungs, causing pneumothorax. Allergy to local anesthetic during local anesthesia, which is life-threatening. Pleural reaction during local anesthetic puncture and extensive subcutaneous emphysema during drainage. Possible respiratory and cardiac arrest when a drainage tube is placed. Excessive drainage and venting of the drainage tube may lead to diplopia pulmonary edema. In the daily care of the drainage tube, if care is not taken, it may cause dislodgement of the drainage tube, redness and swelling around the drainage port, and infection.
