Nursing considerations for chest drains

The precautions for caring for chest drainage tubes include properly fixing the drainage tubes, observing the amount and character of drainage fluid, keeping the drainage tubes unobstructed, and keeping the wounds clean.
1. Properly fixing the drainage tube: patients should be told not to pull the catheter at will, and the drainage bag or bottle should be placed at least 30 centimeters below the level of the drainage tube opening.
2. Observe the amount and character of drainage fluid: the amount and color of drainage fluid should be recorded for 24 hours; consult the doctor if there is more drainage fluid; consider removing the drainage tube if the drainage fluid gradually decreases and there is a good lung recuperation.
3. Keep the drainage tube open: patients should avoid twisting and folding the drainage tube when they are moving or resting, so as to avoid blockage of the drainage tube, which may lead to poor drainage, and squeeze the drainage tube regularly, so as to avoid blockage of the drainage tube by fibers and blood clots.
4. Keep the wound clean: change the dressing regularly, use iodophor to sterilize the wound at the mouth of the drainage tube, and cover it with a sterile dressing.
It is recommended to consult a specialist for chest drain care according to the doctor’s advice.
