The causes of retinal arteriosclerosis in both eyes mainly include ageing and systemic diseases.
1. With ageing, the retinal blood vessels of the eye will have corresponding degenerative changes, such as weakening of the elasticity of blood vessels, manifested as retinal atherosclerosis, which is a physiological change, mostly considered for clinical observation.
2. Systemic diseases such as hypertension and diabetes mellitus can also lead to atherosclerosis in the retina. Hypertension may lead to fibrosis of the walls of retinal blood vessels, resulting in atherosclerosis of the fundus. Hyperglycemia may accelerate the damage to the endothelial cells of blood vessels, causing atherosclerosis of the fundus.
Patients with bilateral retinal arteriosclerosis are advised to go to the hospital for timely examination to clarify their condition and follow the doctor’s instructions.
