Eye ulcers have the potential to be cured if treated appropriately. However, if the corneal scarring is caused by the eye ulcer, it may be difficult to treat the vision loss caused by the scarring. Eye ulcers are often caused by infections and usually improve with anti-infective treatment. However, in some complicated cases, the cornea may be ruptured or punctured, and a corneal transplant may be needed to fully cure the condition. If there is localized scarring due to ulceration, this scarring may bring about astigmatism or directly affect vision, which is often difficult to treat. If the layers are deeper, a corneal transplant may be needed to treat it; if the layers are shallower, laser treatment can also be tried first to see if the vision can be improved again.
