Rhinorrhea is the Western equivalent of inflammatory sinus disease. It refers to a nasal disease characterised by nasal discharge like a fountain of water, with a large amount of nasal discharge. In Chinese medicine, it is also known as “brain leakage”, “brain sand”, “brain collapse” and “brain abyss”. It is mostly caused by external wind-heat, or wind-cold attack, which turns into heat over a long period of time, and the evil heat steams up through the nasal passage and offends the nasal orifices.
The actual symptoms include wind-heat in the lung channels, heat in the bile vessels and damp-heat in the spleen and stomach; the deficiency symptoms can be seen in the deficiency of lung qi and spleen qi.
