What to do if you swallow a fishbone

If you accidentally swallow a fishbone and experience discomfort such as sore throat and painful swallowing, you should go to the hospital in time for consultation and treatment. Depending on the part of the body where the fishbone is choked, different external treatments will be taken to remove the fishbone. 1. Fishbone stuck in the pharynx: in the oropharynx, it can be taken out with forceps under direct vision; in the laryngopharynx, it can be taken out with pharyngeal foreign body forceps under indirect laryngoscopy or endoscopy. 2. Fishbone stuck in the esophagus: the foreign body can be removed during esophagoscopy or electronic gastroscopy. 3. Fishbone stuck in the larynx or airway: in the larynx can be removed under direct laryngoscopy; in the airway can be removed under bronchoscopy. The fishbone should not be swallowed by itself and forced down with food, so as not to push the fishbone deeper into the esophagus, and may even cut the esophagus or aggravate its extent. Fasting or eating a liquid diet for 1~2 days after the fishbone is removed, depending on the condition, can reduce pain and prevent infection.
