What to do if you leak when you run

Leakage of urine upon running may be related to overfilling of the bladder, or it may be related to cystitis, reduced function of pelvic floor muscles, urinary tract obstruction and other conditions, which require the selection of appropriate treatments according to the different causes, including emptying the urine before exercise, application of medications, performing functional exercises for pelvic floor muscles, and surgical treatments. Drugs should be applied under doctor’s guidance.
1. Bladder filling: If the bladder is not emptied of urine before exercise, resulting in overfilling of the bladder, during exercise, leakage of urine may occur. It is necessary for the patient to empty the urine before exercise, and the symptoms can slowly subside.
2. Cystitis: If the patient has cystitis lesions, inflammation occurs due to bacterial and viral invasion of the bladder mucosa. During exercise, the bladder is stimulated, inducing symptoms of urinary leakage. After diagnosing the condition, antibiotics such as cefixime are chosen for anti-infection treatment, and the symptoms will improve after the inflammation subsides.
3. Pelvic floor muscle dysfunction: mostly seen in women who have given birth to many times, it is necessary to carry out pelvic floor muscle function exercise, which can be combined with physiotherapy to promote the symptoms to subside.
4. Urinary tract obstruction: Due to the influence of urethral stenosis, prostate hyperplasia and other lesions, resulting in the accumulation of urine, the bladder is stimulated during running, and the symptoms of urinary leakage can also occur. It is necessary to clarify the condition, and then release the urethral obstruction as soon as possible to improve the condition.
There are other reasons for urine leakage when running, so it is recommended to have an active diagnosis and treatment in regular hospitals.
