Cangzhu Efficacy

Atractylodes macrocephala has the efficacy of dispelling wind and removing dampness, strengthening the spleen and brightening the eyes, and is mainly used for the treatment of dampness trapped in the spleen and stomach, lethargy and sleepiness, and cellular plumping and abdominal distension and other diseases. Atractylodes macrocephala is the dried rhizome of Atractylodes macrocephala or Atractylodes macrocephala, family Asteraceae. It is pungent and bitter in flavor, mild in nature, and belongs to the spleen, stomach and liver meridians. Cangzhu has the efficacy of drying dampness, strengthening the spleen, dispelling wind-cold and brightening the eyes. It is used in treating dampness obstruction in the middle jiao (dampness obstructing the function of the spleen and stomach), distension of the epigastrium (abdomen), oedema, impotence and kneading of the feet, rheumatism paralysis, wind-cold colds, night blindness, and dimness of the eyes. Note that it is contraindicated in cases of Yin deficiency with internal heat and Qi deficiency with profuse sweating.
