Generally speaking, deliveries between 37 and 42 weeks of pregnancy are considered normal deliveries. The fetal lungs mature after 37 weeks, so if the delivery is more than 37 weeks and less than 42 weeks, it is considered a normal delivery. Most people deliver around 40 weeks. If labor occurs before 37 weeks of gestation, it is considered preterm labor. Failure to deliver at or beyond 42 weeks is called a term pregnancy. The incidence of fetal distress and macrosomia increases as the weeks of gestation increase. If labor does not occur after the due date, it is recommended that you seek medical attention and undergo regular labor tests to monitor fetal development.
