Why sandbag compression after hernia surgery

The purpose of sandbag compression of the wound after hernia surgery is to stop bleeding, and the duration of sandbag compression is about 24 hours after surgery. Clinically, a sandbag or salt bag of about 1 pound, wrapped with a towel on the outside, is used to compress the wound, because the most common type of extra-abdominal hernia is inguinal hernia. In the past, the surgery is usually done in open surgery, and there may be blood seepage from the local surgery, in which the local blood seepage accumulates after the surgery, and there is a possibility of secondary bacterial infection, or even the formation of abscesses. Therefore, in the past, sandbags were usually used to compress the inguinal hernia for 24 hours after open inguinal hernia surgery, with the aim of stopping bleeding and reducing the possibility of bleeding and infection.
