Lotus seed, Chinese yam, Gorgon fruit and Poria have the effects of nourishing the heart and tranquilizing the mind (stabilizing the mind by nourishing the heart), benefiting qi and nourishing yin (tonifying qi, replenishing yin), and inducing diuresis and eliminating oedema (facilitating urination and eliminating oedema). 1. Lotus Seed: It has the effects of tonifying the spleen and the kidney, astringing the essence and stopping leucorrhea, nourishing the heart and tranquilizing the mind. It is used for diarrhea (diarrhea caused by weakness of the spleen), diarrhea, spermatorrhea, palpitation (rapid heartbeat, often accompanied by panic) and insomnia. It is not recommended for people with fullness and distension, or those with dry stools. 2. Chinese yam: it is beneficial to qi and yin, nourishes the spleen, lungs and kidneys, and stops spermatorrhea. It can be used for treating spleen deficiency with little food, tiredness (fatigue), loose stools (loose feces), diarrhea, spermatorrhea, dysuria, internal heat and thirst (internal heat accompanied by symptoms such as overeating, drinking, and urinating), and so on. Dampness in the fullness (too much dampness leading to fullness of the spleen and stomach discomfort) or solid evil, stagnation is prohibited. 3. Gorgon fruit: has the effect of benefiting the kidney and fixing the essence, strengthening the spleen and stopping diarrhea, removing dampness and stopping the band. Used for spermatorrhea, urination, frequent urination, spleen deficiency and prolonged diarrhea, leucorrhea (cloudy urine like white slurry), and leucorrhea. 4. Poria: It has the effect of inducing diuresis, eliminating swelling, seeping dampness, strengthening the spleen and tranquilizing the heart. It is used for treating edema, phlegm (pathological products formed by impaired water metabolism), diarrhea in spleen deficiency, palpitation and insomnia. Caution should be exercised if there is deficiency of yin without dampness-heat, deficiency of cold and essence-slip, or deficiency of qi and subsidence.
