If your leukorrhea is yellow, sticky and snotty, you probably have bacterial vaginitis. There are three main clinical categories of vaginitis: bacterial vaginitis, trichomoniasis and mycotic vaginitis. The clinical symptoms of these three types of vaginitis vary because of the difference in the causative organisms. In bacterial vaginitis, the leukorrhea is usually yellow or yellow-green and thick, sometimes with a fishy odor. In trichomoniasis, the leukorrhea is usually thin and yellow in color. In mycosis vaginalis, the leucorrhea is usually heavily increased, white and can be tofu-like. In order to distinguish which type of vaginitis you have, we can go to the hospital and have the discharge tested. The main treatment for bacterial vaginitis is metronidazole, which can be taken orally or placed intravaginally, usually for a week or so.
