What does soft tissue edema mean?

Soft tissue edema can be when the body has swelling after an injury, for example, under the skin. It can be described as soft tissue edema or hypoproteinemia, and it can also be expressed as soft tissue edema after a major surgery where the nutritional status is very poor resulting in fluid buildup inside the abdominal cavity, ascites as well as edema of the lower extremities, and generalized edema. Depending on the cause, different treatments are used. Trauma-induced soft tissue edema is mainly caused by trauma and manifests itself as exudation of tissue fluid. It can be treated by local cold compresses to reduce the enlargement of the lump, or local hot compresses after 1 or 2 days, with the aim of promoting blood circulation. If the edema is caused by hypoproteinemia, it is necessary to correct the cause of the disease first, that is, enteral parenteral nutrition or input of human albumin to correct the low protein level in the body, so that the tissue edema and ascites can be eliminated.
