Ways to Recover Quickly from Tension Headaches

Analgesics are used for pain relief during acute attacks of tension headaches. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are often used for analgesia during acute attacks of tension headaches. Examples include acetaminophen, aspirin, and ibuprofen. Combined use of caffeine improves the efficacy of NSAIDs, but also increases the risk of substance abuse headaches and is generally used as a second-line option. Single analgesics should not be used for more than 14 days per month, and if caffeine is used in combination, it should not be used for more than 9 days per month to avoid rebound headaches. If relief is difficult with short-term medications, prophylactic medications such as tricyclic antidepressants, commonly known as amitriptyline, should be considered. If tension headache occurs, it should be treated with medication under the supervision of a doctor.
