Is harelip hereditary?

Harelip, also called congenital cleft lip, is inherited. In addition, it is related to multiple factors such as viral infections, colds, fevers, medications, etc. during pregnancy. Some children not only have congenital cleft lip, but also congenital cleft palate. Congenital cleft lip and palate can be corrected by later surgery. Generally, if the cleft lip is unilateral, it can be treated surgically when the child is 3-6 months old. In the case of bilateral cleft lip, surgical treatment is recommended around 6-12 months of age. For congenital cleft palate, surgical treatment is recommended between the child’s one and a half to three years of age. It requires a visit to the oral and maxillofacial surgery department of a regular hospital for inpatient surgical treatment.
