Frequent sighing belongs to the category of depression in traditional Chinese medicine, and can be treated with traditional Chinese medicines such as Chai Hu Shuo Liver Essence and Gan Mai Da Zao Tang.
Liver qi stagnation is characterized by mental depression, emotional restlessness, tai hua, chest and ribs distension and pain with no definite place, belching (burping), lack of appetite, and irregular bowel movements (abnormal stools). Treatment is with Chai Hu Shuo Liver Essence, which includes Chai Hu, Xiang Fu, Citrus aurantium, Chuan Xiong, Paeonia lactiflora, and Glycyrrhiza glabra.
Those with loss of mental and spiritual nourishment are characterized by trance, restlessness of the mind, suspiciousness, easy to be frightened, sadness and crying, even temperamental, good at breathing too much, or lack of stretching at times. Treatment is with Ganmai Dazao Tang, which includes licorice, Chinese wheat, and jujube.
