Do you need to fast for a lower abdominal MRI?

Fasting is required for a lower abdominal MRI, with a minimum of 6 to 8 hours of fasting. Lower abdominal MRI mainly examines the lower abdomen including a portion of the bowel, bladder, uterus, adnexa, prostate and other organs, and can also discover a portion of the abdominal cavity and structures within the retroperitoneum, which enables an effective examination of the organ locations and possible abnormalities. If you eat before the examination, it may cause the gallbladder to secrete too much bile, and it will stimulate peristalsis in the intestines. Eating will also increase the amount of gas in the intestines, which will interfere with the results of the examination. In addition, the presence of food in the intestines can also cause some interference with the normal effects of the test site. Therefore, it is generally recommended to fast for at least 6 to 8 hours prior to an MRI of the lower abdomen, which is the normal time for gastric emptying. Failure to fast may interfere with the normal visualization of the examined area, which in turn may interfere with the interpretation of the results.
