Why is lumbar disc herniation prone to recurrence?

After treatment and rest, patients with lumbar disc herniation can be relieved or cured, but the recurrence rate of the disease is quite high, and many patients, although reluctantly, become “repeat customers” who “visit” the doctor from time to time. The reasons for the high recurrence rate of the disease are as follows: (1) after treatment of lumbar disc herniation, although the symptoms basically disappeared, but many patients did not completely return to the nucleus pulposus, only the degree of compression of the nerve root is relieved, or the adhesion of the nerve root is lifted. (2) Although the condition of lumbar disc herniation patients has been stabilized or healed, but in a short period of time, once strain or sprain lumbar can make the nucleus pulposus protrude again, resulting in the recurrence of the disease. (3) In cold and humid seasons, the patient does not pay attention to warmth, and wind, cold and dampness invade the diseased part of the body, and the recurrence of the disease is easily triggered by strain. (4) Although the nucleus pulposus of the segment has been removed in postoperative patients, the stability of the spine above and below the segment is poor after surgery, so the discs in the upper and lower segments of the operated segment are prone to prolapse, leading to the recurrence of lumbar disc herniation. For lumbar disc herniation, in addition to actively taking various treatments, the most important measure is prevention. So, how can we prevent the recurrence of lumbar disc herniation? People need a variety of different activity postures in daily life, study and work, and have developed their own habits, the correctness or otherwise of which has an important impact on the human body. Therefore, we are required to pay attention to the rationality of our usual standing, sitting, labor posture, and sleeping posture, correct bad posture and habits, strengthen exercise, enhance physical fitness, and especially strengthen the functional exercise of the lumbar and back muscles. Because proper exercise can improve muscle blood circulation, promote metabolism, increase muscle responsiveness and strength, release soft tissue adhesions, correct the imbalance between the intrinsic and extrinsic balance of the spine, and improve the stability, flexibility and durability of the lumbar spine, thus playing a good therapeutic and preventive role.
