The first thing to look at is whether the dog that bit the patient is vaccinated or unvaccinated; whether it is free-range or captive. If the dog is vaccinated and captive, if the skin is cut by its teeth, the wound only needs to be cleaned and disinfected. If the dog is not vaccinated and is free-ranging, it needs to be cleaned and disinfected, and the rabies vaccine and, if necessary, rabies immunoglobulin, should be administered as soon as possible. If it is not certain that the dog is healthy, the safest measure is to get a rabies vaccination as soon as possible.
