Tests for new types of pneumonia

The most important thing to diagnose novel coronavirus pneumonia is to take the epidemiologic history of the patient. Whether the patient has traveled to Wuhan or other infected areas 14 days prior to the onset of symptoms, whether the patient has been in contact with patients with novel coronavirus pneumonia, and whether there is any clustering of illnesses. In addition to the epidemiologic history, attention should be paid to the patient’s relevant clinical manifestations, including fever and cough. Tests usually performed include the following: 1. blood routine: patients with novel coronavirus pneumonia often show lymphopenia; 2. chest imaging: chest radiography and chest CT are preferred. If conditions permit, chest CT is more advantageous than chest radiography for the judgment of the disease. Chest CT can show multiple ground-glass shadows and solid lung lesions. 3. For definitive diagnosis of the disease, novel coronavirus pathogenetic tests, including nucleic acid and sequencing tests, are needed. Source: Dr. Yurai
