What is wrong with feeling conscious and unable to move when sleeping?

Feeling conscious while sleeping, but not being able to move your arms and legs is medically known as sleep paralysis. This condition is a specific sleep phenomenon that does not need to be overstressed and is often relieved with 5-10 minutes of rest. Sleep paralysis can occur at night or in the morning. Irregular sleep habits and stressful life situations can increase the chances of this disease. Sleep can generally be divided into non-rapid eye movement sleep stages and rapid eye movement sleep stages. In non-REM sleep, the eyeballs do not move and the person does not dream. However, during the oculomotor REM sleep stage, the increased excitability of the patient’s cerebral cortex may cause the brain to wake up early, but the body is still in a state of deep sleep. Therefore, consciousness can occur but physical activity is not possible, and some patients may even be accompanied by hallucinations. In this case, the patient can rotate the eyeballs, then squeeze the eyes, then slowly nuzzle and turn the head to gradually restore the muscle tone of the whole body, and then restore the strength of the limbs, such symptoms can be eliminated. If such symptoms occur more frequently, attention should be paid to adjusting emotions, avoiding excessive emotional tension, anxiety and hyperactivity, and if necessary, oral medication to improve sleep and anti-anxiety can be taken under the guidance of a doctor.
