Symptomatic management is required for those with significant symptoms. Mannitol or sodium heptaoside can be used for dehydration to relieve nerve root compression; non-steroidal anti-inflammatory analgesics such as celecoxib capsules can also be used for anti-inflammatory analgesia to relieve the manifestation of nerve dysfunction. Pelvic traction may be used in patients with initial or recurrent acute episodes.
For long duration, recurrent episodes, severe symptoms combined with spinal stenosis and where conservative treatment is ineffective, surgical treatment is possible. For example, laminectomy and nucleus pulposus removal and percutaneous foraminotomy for nucleus pulposus removal are performed.
