The main function of external application of mannitol is to clear heat, reduce swelling, and relieve pain. Mannitol can reduce swelling by absorbing water from local tissues. It can also be applied externally to mastitis and folliculitis in the early stages of the disease before pus is formed, and can be used to reduce swelling, relieve pain and disperse knots. For eye diseases, such as redness and swelling of the eyelids and wheals, commonly known as needle’s eye, treatment with mannitol can also be very effective. For soft tissue contusions and local redness and pain caused by trauma, as well as for abdominal lumps and pain in appendicitis, topical application of mancozeb can be very effective.
