What to do if you have a painful hard lump in your breast while breastfeeding

Hard lumps and pain in the breast during breastfeeding can be treated by applying hot towels, taking amoxicillin, and surgery. During breastfeeding, due to nipple cracking, retrograde infection of Staphylococcus aureus enters the breast and causes lumps to appear when milk stagnation forms inflammation. Early inflammation can be treated by hot towel compresses to promote local blood circulation, reduce pain, facilitate milk secretion and make the lumps gradually shrink. At the same time, hot water showers on the breasts and gentle massage on the breast area will facilitate the flow of milk and play a role in unblocking the mammary glands. As acute mastitis is related to milk stagnation and bacterial invasion, it can be treated with oral antibacterial and anti-inflammatory treatment with amoxicillin. Most acute mastitis can be relieved by taking oral antibiotics. Through physiotherapy and oral medication, inflammation is not controlled and develops into a breast abscess, which is a more serious condition and should be promptly treated in hospital by incising and draining the glandular abscess and post-operatively with anti-infective treatment.
