A right-sided heart can be detected in the foetus and is usually screened for by antenatal ultrasound. The examination is performed using a staged analysis method, which first localises the abdominal organs, followed by the atria, ventricles and great vessels. This method is a good diagnostic tool for right-sided hearts as it accurately determines the orientation of the atria in the case of visceral ectopia, the relationship between the descending aorta and the inferior vena cava, and the presence of abnormal intracardiac structures.
