The medicinal property of Yuan Zhi, alias Xiao Cao, Fine Cao, Little Chicken Leg, and Fine Leaf Yuan Zhi, is slightly warm, with a pungent, bitter medicinal taste. It is a member of the Heart, Kidney and Lung meridians. The effects of Yuan Zhi include tranquilizing and educating the mind, dispelling phlegm and opening the orifices, and dispersing carbuncles and swellings. It is mainly used for insomnia and dreaminess, forgetfulness and palpitations, trance, cough and phlegm, sores and swellings, and breast pain caused by disorders of the heart and kidney. It is contraindicated for people with fire in the heart and kidney and yin deficiency and hyperactivity. Modern pharmacological studies have shown that Fructus Farreri has an expectorant and sedative effect; it also has an excitatory effect on the uterus and a hypotensive effect; it also has a strong hemolytic effect and a certain antibacterial effect.
