Do multiple rib fractures require follow-up?

Multiple rib fractures require follow-up treatment. Rib fractures are treated by external immobilization with a chest strap or surgical immobilization, followed by bed rest, nutrition, and subsequent debridement of the rib fixation band or surgical removal of the plate. Multiple rib fractures can be externally immobilized by means of a rib fixation band if there is no kyphosis; if kyphosis is present, the ribs need to be surgically immobilized. If combined with hemopneumothorax, hemopneumothorax can be treated by closed chest drainage or other methods. The follow-up treatment varies slightly from case to case. In the follow-up treatment, patients with rib fracture should rest in bed and take nutritional supplements, especially calcium and vitamin D. After about one month, patients who are fixed externally with rib fixation straps can remove the rib fixation straps, while patients who are fixed surgically need to have the plates removed surgically again within one to two years after the operation. If multiple rib fractures are diagnosed, please follow your doctor’s instructions.
