Extremely lateral discs can be treated conservatively if the herniation is mild, or surgically if the compression of the nerve root causes significant discomfort.
Extremely lateral disc refers to the lateral herniation of the intervertebral disc, which usually leads to nerve root compression and neurological symptoms, such as pain, sensory or motor deficits. If the above discomfort is not obvious, it can be treated conservatively, such as regular traction or local physical therapy.
For the extreme lateral disc compressing one side of the nerve root, if the pain, sensation or movement disorders caused by the disc have significantly affected daily life or work, or if the symptoms continue to worsen, surgical treatment is required, such as minimally invasive or open surgery to remove the herniated nucleus pulposus tissue, in order to improve the uncomfortable symptoms.
Extremely lateral herniated discs are recommended to go to a regular hospital without delaying treatment.
