Mildly high Nse (NSE) on physical examination generally has no clinical significance, but it is recommended to consult with a medical professional and combine with the patient’s clinical data for a comprehensive analysis. NSE also refers to neuron-specific enolase, which is most abundant in normal human brain tissue, and is also abnormally expressed in tumor tissues originating from neuroendocrine cells. Elevated serum NSE is found in small cell lung cancer, neuroblastoma, and neuroendocrine tumors such as pheochromocytoma, islet cell tumor, medullary thyroid tumor, melanoma, and retinoblastoma. However, the specificity of this indicator is not strong, and even if it is elevated, it does not necessarily mean that the above tumors are present. Generally, it needs to be analyzed in combination with other tumor markers and other tests such as imaging.
