What does a small amount of mitral tricuspid regurgitation mean?

Small amounts of mitral and tricuspid regurgitation refer to minor insufficiency of the mitral and tricuspid valves connecting the atria and ventricles. Most patients have physiologic or degenerative valves due to aging and do not require treatment. In some cases, the relative insufficiency is due to prolonged ischemic cardiomyopathy or dilated cardiomyopathy, which leads to enlargement of the heart chambers. The specific cause of mitral and tricuspid regurgitation should be determined. If the regurgitation is due to valve degeneration or age, most of them do not need to be treated and only require regular follow-up. In cases of combined heart failure, dilated cardiomyopathy, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, or coronary artery disease, the main focus is to treat the primary cause, and most small amounts of regurgitation do not require excessive intervention.
