Effects of bilateral thyroidectomy

The main effect of bilateral thyroid removal is hypothyroidism, which means that thyroid hormones are no longer available or are no longer able to be supplied to the body for application. After both sides of the thyroid gland are removed, the patient develops symptoms of hypothyroidism, which manifest themselves as dullness or wilting, drowsiness, decreased immunity, frequent illnesses such as colds and fevers, as well as leading to weight loss and physical weakness. After total bilateral thyroidectomy, patients usually need lifelong thyroid hormone supplementation, such as eugenol. If the thyroid gland is partially excised bilaterally, some patients usually do not suffer from thyroxine deficiency or hypothyroidism.
