Many obese patients have been produced with the metabolic syndrome of type 2 diabetes due to obesity; type 2 diabetes has become a worldwide epidemic, with a global incidence of about 239 million in 2010 according to the International Diabetes Federation (IDF). The incidence of diabetes is higher in overly obese people with a BMI ≥ 35. Studies have shown that the prevalence of type 2 diabetes is up to 40 times higher in this group compared to the normal population, which is also notable. When people with this type of diabetes reduce their BMI to normal levels, the vast majority experience significant improvement in their diabetes symptoms. By following a strict diet plan and exercising, they are able to stop their diabetes medications altogether and have better control of their blood sugar. Usually a BMI of less than 25 is considered normal weight, while between 25 and 30 is overweight, and 30 to 35 increases as a cause, but this does not mean that obese people are destined to develop diabetes. Recent studies show that 36% of Americans are obese and another 33% are overweight (BMI between 25 and 30), but not as many people have diabetes. The number of people with diabetes is not as high. In China, the overall prevalence of diabetes in people over 20 years of age is 9.7%, and the prevalence of pre-diabetes is 15.5%. According to this projection, the total number of people with diabetes in China has reached 148 million. Nearly 90% are type 2 diabetics, and most patients are overweight and obese to varying degrees. For heavily obese diabetic patients, long-term adherence to exercise can accelerate the burning of fat, resulting in a gradual loss of weight. For slightly obese diabetic patients, with adequate nutrition and energy, taking active and effective exercise can have a good effect on blood sugar control. In addition to traditional medical treatment methods, obese diabetes can be completely relieved by surgical treatment. After more than thirty years of development, weight reduction and metabolic surgery has long been one of the effective treatment methods for type 2 diabetes patients, which can reduce diabetes-related complications in addition to improving blood sugar and metabolic disorders through changes in the gastrointestinal tract. However, diabetes surgery is not available to everyone. According to the Chinese Guidelines for the Surgical Treatment of Obesity and Diabetes (2014), surgery can only be performed on patients who meet the following conditions: 1. The duration of type 2 diabetes ≤ 15 years, and the pancreatic islets still have some insulin secretion function, and fasting serum C-peptide ≥ 1/2 of the lower limit of normal value. 2. BMI (body mass index) ≥ 27.5 kg/m2. 3. When waist circumference ≥ 90cm for men and ≥ 85cm for women, the recommended grade of surgery can be increased as appropriate. 4, The recommended age for surgery is 16-65 years. Metabolic surgery includes: laparoscopic minimally invasive gastric bypass surgery, laparoscopic minimally invasive sleeve gastrectomy.
