The risk of carotid plaque is related to the nature, location and shape of the plaque. One of the main hazards is ischemic stroke, which is mostly seen in patients with unstable plaque. Unstable plaque, also known as soft plaque and vulnerable plaque, is irregular in shape and easy to dislodge, which can block the cerebral blood vessels with blood flow and cause ischemic stroke, resulting in symptoms such as hemiplegia, aphasia, crooked eyes and slanted mouth. In contrast, in patients with stable plaque, the plaque is calcified, stronger and less likely to fall off and rupture, so it is less likely to cause cerebrovascular embolism or the corresponding symptoms.
