How to combine multidisciplinary efforts to remove a large tumor that invades the aorta?

Relying on medical and health service community, our multidisciplinary collaboration successfully resected a rare wrapped aortic giant tumor Recently, a rare wrapped aortic giant tumor was successfully resected by the joint multidisciplinary efforts of vascular surgery. The patient, who came from Xishuangbanna Prefecture in the southwest of China, had been suffering from back pain for 3 months and was found to have a huge retroperitoneal tumor in the thorax and abdomen by CT, which seriously invaded the aorta. Later, the patient came to Xishuangbanna People’s Hospital with the attitude of giving it a try. After remote consultation through the medical and health service community established by the hospital and our hospital, Director Zhang Xiaoming and Deputy Chief Physician Zhang Xuemin carefully analyzed the condition and CT and concluded that although the patient was difficult and risky to operate, there was not no chance of surgical cure. The patient came to our hospital with the last ray of hope. After admission, the review revealed that the tumor had doubled in size compared with 3 months ago, with a diameter of 500px, compressing the left lower lung and heart, and the tumor completely wrapped the descending aorta and part of the abdominal aorta, with a high risk of perioperative death and paraplegia. Director Zhang Xiaoming taught the subordinate physicians that doctors should not retreat in the struggle with the disease, and should hold the spirit of “the brave man wins when the road is narrow”. On 2013-8-13, Dr. Zhang led the vascular surgery team to operate on the patient. During the operation, Dr. Zhang Hong from the Department of Anesthesiology and the operating room cooperated with the patient, and invited Dr. Yang Rongli, director of the Department of Bone Oncology, and Dr. Zhou Feili from the Department of Thoracic Surgery to assist on the stage, and finally the tumor was completely removed and the descending aortic artificial vessel was replaced. Afterwards, under the careful treatment of Dr. Zhang Liu in ICU, the patient was successfully detoxified and returned to the general ward on the second day, and now the patient is recovering well without any complications. After the operation, Dr. Zhang Xiaoming was very impressed with the patient’s treatment. For one thing, the patient was very lucky to benefit from the medical and health service community model established by our hospital and Xishuangbanna State People’s Hospital. Secondly, this is a successful example of multidisciplinary cooperation and strong alliance of our hospital.
