Cavities don’t clean themselves. Tooth decay, medically called caries, is a bacterial attack on the tooth starting from the surface, resulting in demineralization and softening of the tooth, expansion of the area and then collapse, followed by deposition of food debris and pigmentation, i.e., the appearance of the black holes that we commonly see. The decayed tissue is demineralized and softened tooth tissue in addition to food debris. Caries is usually more than just the surface dirt that is seen; the inside of the tooth is usually attacked by bacteria as well. To terminate the process of caries, the decayed material needs to be completely removed. Individuals who do not have professional sterilization tools are prone to bring in other bacteria into the mouth. Secondly, they do not have the professional medical knowledge and are not familiar with the anatomy of the teeth to remove the decayed tissue completely. This will lead to the continued development of caries. Therefore, if you cannot clean the softened decayed tissue by yourself, you need your dentist to use a dental handpiece with emery or tungsten carbide drill to terminate the caries process. Finally, when suffering from tooth decay, it is advisable to seek medical attention and treatment as soon as possible.
