Bony mandibular retraction can be treated with either a movable orthotic to correct the bite or a surgical option.
Bony jaw retraction is a misalignment of the jaw retracted bite due to developmental problems of the mandible or insufficient function of the extrapterygoid muscles. Generally, orthodontic appliances such as planar guides or fixed orthodontic appliances are used to adjust the occlusion, expand the upper arch and adjust the lower arch, so as to guide the occlusal relationship between the upper and lower jaws towards stabilization.
