About medication for seborrheic hair loss

1.What is seborrheic alopecia (SA)? It is also called male pattern baldness, androgenetic alopecia, diffuse alopecia. It mostly occurs in men aged 20~30 years old, mostly on the top of the head and both sides of the forehead. 2.In addition to surgery can choose those medications? Seborrheic alopecia is mainly caused by abnormal androgen metabolism. Drug treatment can be chosen to inhibit androgen metabolizing enzymes or androgen receptors; to block the activity of androgens in target organs. There are three kinds of drugs commonly used: a. drugs that regulate androgen metabolism; b. anti-androgen drugs; c: drugs that promote hair elongation. 3. What are the specific types of drugs and their efficacy? (1) Drugs regulating androgen metabolism: Finasteride, a selective type II 5α reductase inhibitor, can reduce serum and hair follicle dihydrotestosterone levels. Type II 5α reductase is distributed in the inner layer of the outer root sheath, the proximal area of the hair follicle, the inner root sheath and the follicular funnel area. Clinically significant differences were shown in hair loss and hair growth in the adherent 5-year use group compared to the control group. Adverse effects of the drug include abnormal liver function, sexual dysfunction, depression, mood disorders, sleep and dietary abnormalities. They generally resolved after discontinuation of the drug. The drug is not effective in women during menopause, and is prohibited for pregnant women and children. (2) Anti-androgen drugs: ①Flutamide: oral 250mg/d can change the situation of female SA hair loss. ② Flutamide: topical anti-androgen drug, can be used locally to improve hair growth ③ 17α estradiol: topical anti-androgen drug, the effect of women is better than men. (3) Hair growth promoting drugs: Minoxidil 2% or 5% topical application can improve local hair growth.
