Is it possible to operate on my child’s short fingers?

We often encounter the problem of short fingers in children because many causes can lead to short fingers, such as Poland syndrome, short finger hypoplasia and girdle syndrome. If the palm of the short finger is close to the normal palm, we may recommend surgery to lengthen it and increase the length of the short finger. After surgery, the child will have better clenching and gripping ability and the appearance will improve. If the palm of the hand is also small, but the fingers are more flexible, function well, and have an acceptable appearance, we generally recommend not having surgery. Why? Because after surgery to elongate the fingers, the original relatively coordinated fingers will become less coordinated, the appearance is not ideal, and there is no essential change in function, so we usually do not recommend surgery.
