Because the average life expectancy of a chordoma is about 6.3 years, how long a chordoma patient lives after surgery basically fluctuates around 6.3 years or less. Because the prognosis for chordoma patients is not particularly good, overall, the treatment outcome is not satisfactory. Even with aggressive surgery combined with radiation therapy, the five-year recurrence rate can still be as high as 60-70%, and further radiation therapy is often ineffective when the tumor recurs, but increases the damage of radiation therapy, a cause of poor patient prognosis. Tumor recurrence is an important cause of death, but the average life expectancy of chordoma without any treatment is no more than 2 years. Therefore, aggressive surgery combined with radiotherapy is advocated for chordoma, which can improve patient survival rates.
