Colitis belongs to the category of “dysentery” in Chinese medicine, and there are scriptural formulas for treating this disease, such as Bai Tou Weng Tang, Lian Li Tang, and Paeonia Lactiflora Tang. Dysentery is a disease characterized by abdominal pain, dysentery of white pus and blood, and a sense of urgency and heaviness (discomfort in the lower abdomen, a strong desire to relieve stools, and a feeling of incomplete evacuation of the bowels after defecation). Ulcerative colitis, etc. can be identified and treated with reference to dysentery. Zhang Zhongjing, in his “Treatise on Typhoid Fever” and “The Essentials of the Golden Chamber”, referred to diarrhea and dysentery collectively as “diarrhea”, and his prescription for the treatment of dysentery, “Bai Tou Weng Tang”, has been used for generations to come. Bai Tu Weng Tang can cool the blood, remove stagnation, clear heat and detoxify the toxin, and can be used to treat epidemic dysentery. Paeonia lactiflora Tang can regulate qi and blood, purify the intestines and remove dampness, and can be used to treat damp-heat dysentery. Lianli Tang can regulate Qi, remove stagnation, warm the middle Jiao and clear the intestines, and can be used to treat resting dysentery. The adverse effects and contraindications of the above mentioned prescriptions are not clear, abdominal pain, diarrhea and other discomforts should be timely to the hospital for early treatment.
