Herbal formula for treating cardiovascular blockage

Cardiovascular and cerebrovascular blockage belongs to the category of “stroke” in Chinese medicine, and can be treated with Nourishing Yang and Returning Five Soup, Tianma Hook Teng Drink, and Semixia Atractylodis Macrocephalae Tianma Soup.
1. Tonifying Yang and Returning Five Soup is composed of Radix Astragali, Radix Angelicae Sinensis, Radix Paeoniae Alba, Rhizoma Ligustici Chuanxiong, Radix et Rhizoma Polygoni Multiflori, Radix et Rhizoma Polygoni Multiflori, Radix et Rhizoma Polygoni Multiflori and Radix Rehmanniae. It has the effect of tonifying qi and activating blood circulation. It is used for treating Qi deficiency and blood stasis in stroke, hemiplegia (inability to move one side of the limb freely), askew mouth and eyes, speech, salivation at the corners of the mouth (drooling), frequent urination or incontinence of urination, with a dull tongue, white moss, and a slow and feeble pulse.
2. Tianma Hookteng Drink is composed of Tianma, Hookteng, Shengshidian, Sichuan hyssop, Motherwort, Scutellaria, Gardenia, Cortex Eucommiae, Mulberry, Poria Zhu, and Shouwu Teng. It has the effects of calming the liver and extinguishing wind (regulating the function of the liver to get rid of internal wind), clearing heat and activating blood, tonifying the liver and kidney.
It treats headache, dizziness, insomnia, red tongue with yellow fur and stringy pulse caused by hyperactivity of liver yang and upward disturbance of liver wind (wind caused by the liver interfering upward to the head).
3. Semixia Atractylodes Tianma Tang is composed of Tianma, Semixia, Tangerine Red, Poria, Licorice, Atractylodes Macrocephalae, Ginger and Jujube. It is effective in resolving phlegm and extinguishing wind, strengthening the spleen and dispelling dampness. It is mainly used in treating wind-phlegm upheaval (wind-phlegm and phlegm evil Qi intruding into the head) syndrome, with dizziness, headache, chest and diaphragm congestion, nausea and vomiting, white and greasy tongue coating, and slippery pulse.
