Can food retention cause a cough?

Accumulated food may cause cough, also known as food cough in Chinese medicine. The spleen is the source of phlegm, and the lungs are the storage of phlegm. When food is accumulated for too long and the spleen and stomach are weak, it is easy to produce phlegm over time, resulting in a cough. Cough caused by food accumulation is due to the retention of food in the stomach for too long, which may cause gastroesophageal reflux of food in the stomach, irritating the throat and causing cough symptoms. After the accumulation of food, indigestion, loss of appetite, malnutrition, poor bowel movement, leading to a decline in the body’s immunity, pathogenic bacteria can easily invade the respiratory tract, causing inflammatory reactions leading to coughing. Accumulation of food injures the spleen, spleen deficiency produces phlegm, phlegm is stored in the lungs, and phlegm obstructs the lung tract, thus causing heat and injury to the lungs. Inflammation in the lungs leads to coughing and phlegm. However, the accumulation of food is not the only cause of cough, if you have a cough, it is recommended to go to the hospital in a timely manner, under the guidance of a professional physician treatment.
