A receding hairline is medically referred to as alopecia areata, which is medically categorized into seven grades depending on the degree.
1. Grade 1 is a mildly receding hairline, usually starting from the temples on both sides and gradually receding, which does not affect the aesthetics.
2. Grade 2 usually has a triangular receding hairline at the two frontal corners, up to two centimeters away from the line of the external auditory canal.
3. Grade III is a more pronounced recession of the frontotemporal hairline, which is more than two centimeters from the line of the external auditory canal.
4. Grade IV is alopecia on the top of the head with a receding frontal midline, accompanied by thinning of the hair on the top of the head, but not to the point of complete loss.
5. Grade V is persistent recession of the frontal hairline with a mid-frontal discontinuity band and more extensive diffuse alopecia on the top of the head.
6. Grade VI is horseshoe-shaped alopecia, with a basic loss of hair in the frontal area separated only by a narrow band of hairs.
7. Grade 7 is complete loss of hair on the forehead and top of the head, leaving only a little hair on the back of the occipital area and the two temporal areas.
