What is occult spina bifida?

Cryptogenic spina bifida is the most common type of spinal canal closure insufficiency, a congenital developmental malformation of the spine, common in the lumbosacral region, where the vertebral plates of the diseased vertebrae are not completely closed, but the contents of the spinal canal do not bulge outward. The formation of spina bifida is associated with abnormalities during fertilization, pregnancy, and embryonic development, and more than 80% are recessive spina bifida, which is not hereditary and will not be passed on to the next generation. The vast majority of recessive spina bifida does not involve the nerve structures in the spinal canal, so there are no lifelong symptoms and no specific external manifestations, but a small number of patients can develop symptoms such as back pain and leg pain when the structures in the spinal canal are involved. Most of them are found by chance when taking X-ray or CT films of the lumbar spine for other reasons, and the scope and severity of the lesion can be fully assessed by MRI. It can be divided into various types according to the imaging presentation: unilateral, floating spine, kissing spine, and mixed. Occult spina bifida often has no obvious signs, and some patients may have clinical manifestations such as localized skin hirsutism, purple spots, small concavities, and hyperpigmentation. Cryptogenic spina bifida does not heal on its own and does not require special treatment if there are no specific symptoms.
