The combination of Yuan Zhi, Yi Zhi Ren and Acorus Calamus has the efficacy of tranquilizing the mind and benefiting the intellect (stabilizing the mind and promoting intellectual development), warming the spleen and stopping diarrhea (relieving diarrhea by warming the spleen). 1. Yuan Zhi: It has the effects of tranquilizing the mind, dispelling phlegm and opening the orifices, and dispersing carbuncles and swellings. It is used for treating insomnia, excessive dreaming, palpitation (rapid heartbeat, often accompanied by panic), dazed and anxious (violent heartbeat, panic and restlessness), forgetfulness, epilepsy, convulsions, and coughing with excessive phlegm. Where solid heat or phlegm fire within the full bloom, as well as gastric ulcers or gastritis should be used with caution. 2. Yi Zhi Ren: It has the effect of warming the spleen, stopping diarrhea and taking in saliva, warming the kidney, shrinking urine and fixing essence. It is used for treating coldness of the spleen and stomach (weak and cold spleen and stomach), vomiting, diarrhea, cold pain in the abdomen, salivation in the mouth, urination, frequent urination, spermatorrhea, and leucorrhea (turbidity of urine like white slurry). 3. Calamus: It has the effect of opening the orifices and waking up the mind (opening the brain orifices and waking up the mind), transforming dampness and stomach, and tranquilizing the mind and benefiting the spirit. It is used for treating phlegm clouding the orifices of the brain and clearing the mind; dampness obstructing the middle Jiao (dampness obstructing the functions of the spleen and stomach), plumpness in the epigastrium (abdomen) (stomach distension and discomfort), and distension and pain.
