Low neutrophils and high lymphocytes in babies are a common manifestation of mainly viral infections. When a baby has a disease, a routine blood test can be performed to determine whether the baby has a viral or bacterial infection. The blood test will indicate the ratio of white blood cells, neutrophils, and lymphocytes, and the specific values can be measured to determine the cause of the infection. When neutrophils are low and lymphocytes are high, this is mainly indicative of a viral infection. Low neutrophils and high lymphocytes can occur in viral infections, such as upper respiratory tract infections, colds, sneezing and runny nose, or viral enteritis, nausea, vomiting, fever and diarrhea. In case of viral infection, depending on the severity of the clinical symptoms of the baby, appropriate medication can be administered. In mild cases, no treatment is needed, as viral infections are self-limiting, but in severe cases, antiviral drugs are needed.
