What is minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery?

I often encounter parents of hernia, syringomyelia and cryptorchidism in my clinic and ask me: Doctor, is this a minimally invasive surgery? I ask in return: Do you know what is minimally invasive? Some parents can’t answer, while others are very “professional” and say: laparoscopy. It should be said that people do not understand or even misunderstand the concept of minimally invasive, thinking that open surgery is invasive and laparoscopy is minimally invasive or even non-invasive. In fact, the concept of minimally invasive is to solve the disease with minimum damage and maximum pain. For example, the traditional treatment of hernia, syringomyelia and cryptorchidism is minimally invasive when the surgical incision is about 1.0 cm through the inguinal opening, without going through the abdominal cavity, with simple anesthesia, and the operation can be finished in 15-20 minutes and discharged from the hospital about 2 days after the operation. If laparoscopy is used, the incision is made through the umbilicus and the operation needs to be operated through the abdominal cavity with gas injection and general anesthesia with tracheal intubation, and the abdominal space in children is smaller and the operation is more restricted. However, laparoscopy is very suitable and preferred for cryptorchid surgery in which the testicles cannot be reached, and it avoids busy enlarging the surgical incision for exploration. Any operation has its indications, and you can also consult online with large domestic children’s hospitals to understand the minimally invasive concept and choose the operation method.
