Must antigen-negative nucleic acids be negative?

The antigen test is negative and the nucleic acid test may be negative or positive.

1. Antigen testing detects the antigenic components of neocoronaviruses in a sample, such as the surface protein structure of the virus, to infer infection by neocoronaviruses. It does not directly detect neocoronavirus antibodies or the genetic sequence of neocoronavirus. False-positive or false-negative results may occur, so the antigen test is only an auxiliary test, and cannot be used as a basis for confirming the diagnosis of neocoronavirus infection.

2. Nucleic acid test can directly detect the genes of the new coronavirus and can be used as the gold standard for confirming the diagnosis of new coronavirus infection. When a person is not infected by the new coronavirus, the antigen test is negative (true negative), then the nucleic acid test is also negative; when a person is infected by the new coronavirus, if the antigen test is negative (false negative), then the nucleic acid test can be positive.
